Freeport Texas Area Guide: What to Know Before You Visit

Surfside Beach sits at the southern tip of Brazoria County, with the Gulf of Mexico to the south and the city of Freeport just a few miles to the west. For guests staying at Surfside Beach RV Resort, Freeport and the surrounding Brazosport area is where you will handle most of your day-to-day needs — groceries, fuel, dining, medical care, and more.

Here is a practical guide to the area.

The Brazosport Area: What It Is

"Brazosport" is a collective name for a cluster of small cities in southern Brazoria County: Freeport, Lake Jackson, Clute, Richwood, Brazoria, and several others. Together they form a community of roughly 100,000 people with a full range of services.

Freeport is the oldest and most industrial of the cities, home to the port, the petrochemical complex, and the fishing marina. It has a working-class, no-frills character that longtime residents take pride in.

Lake Jackson is the planned community built by Dow Chemical in the 1940s to house its workforce. It is the most developed and retail-oriented city in the area, with the best selection of restaurants, shopping, and services.

Clute sits between Freeport and Lake Jackson and has its own commercial corridor along TX-288.

For most visitors to Surfside Beach, Lake Jackson is the primary destination for shopping and dining, with Freeport handling marina, bait shop, and waterfront needs.

Grocery Shopping

HEB — Lake Jackson is the anchor grocery store for the entire area and one of the best HEB locations in the region. HEB is the dominant Texas grocery chain, known for quality produce, a strong seafood counter, and competitive prices. The Lake Jackson store is well-stocked and handles everything from everyday groceries to specialty items.

Walmart Supercenter — Lake Jackson covers general merchandise, groceries, and pharmacy needs.

Dollar General and Family Dollar locations in Freeport handle basic staples if you need something quickly without driving to Lake Jackson.

For fresh seafood, several bait shops near the Freeport marina sell fresh-caught fish and shrimp directly — often the freshest and most affordable option for Gulf seafood.

Fuel

Multiple gas stations operate along TX-332 between Surfside Beach and Freeport, and throughout Lake Jackson. Fuel prices in the area are generally in line with or slightly below Houston metro prices.

Dining Near Surfside Beach

The Brazosport area has a solid dining scene for a small coastal community.

Seafood:

  • Local seafood restaurants in Freeport near the marina serve fresh Gulf catch in casual settings
  • Several Tex-Mex restaurants throughout Lake Jackson and Freeport offer reliable, affordable meals

Casual dining:

  • Lake Jackson has a full range of chain restaurants (Chili's, Applebee's, Olive Garden, etc.) for familiar options
  • Several locally owned diners and lunch spots in Freeport and Clute

Fast food: All major chains are represented in Lake Jackson along TX-288 and Oyster Creek Drive.

Kitty's Purple Cow in Surfside Beach is the closest dining option to the resort — a local institution for breakfast and lunch.

Medical Care

CHI St. Luke's Health — Brazosport in Lake Jackson is the primary hospital serving the area. It handles emergency care, surgery, and most specialty services. About 20 minutes from Surfside Beach.

Urgent care clinics in Lake Jackson and Freeport handle non-emergency medical needs without the ER wait times.

Pharmacies: CVS and Walgreens in Lake Jackson, plus the Walmart pharmacy. Most major prescription medications are available without issue.

Hardware and Home Improvement

Home Depot — Lake Jackson is the primary hardware and home improvement store for the area. Essential for RV maintenance supplies, outdoor furniture, and any repair needs.

Ace Hardware locations in the area handle smaller hardware needs.

Recreation and Attractions

Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge — One of the premier birding destinations on the Texas Gulf Coast. The auto tour route is free and open year-round. Located about 20 minutes from Surfside Beach.

Freeport Marina and Jetties — The working marina at Freeport is worth a visit even if you are not fishing. Charter boats, shrimp boats, and recreational vessels create an active waterfront scene. The jetties are a popular fishing and sightseeing destination.

San Luis Pass County Park — At the western tip of Galveston Island, about 45 minutes from Surfside Beach. Beach access, fishing pier, and picnic areas.

Brazos Bend State Park — About 45 minutes north, this state park offers camping, hiking, and exceptional wildlife viewing including alligators. One of the best state parks in Texas.

Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site — Near West Columbia, about 30 minutes away. A well-preserved 19th-century plantation with guided tours.

Getting Around

The Brazosport area is a car-dependent community — there is no meaningful public transit. A vehicle is essential for getting around.

TX-332 is the main corridor connecting Surfside Beach to Freeport and Lake Jackson. It is a two-lane highway for most of its length, with a speed limit of 55–65 mph. The drive from Surfside Beach to Lake Jackson takes about 20–25 minutes under normal conditions.

TX-288 is the main north-south artery connecting the Brazosport area to Houston. It is a divided highway with a speed limit of 65–75 mph and handles the bulk of commuter and commercial traffic.

Weather and Climate

The Brazosport area has a subtropical Gulf Coast climate — hot and humid summers, mild winters, and a hurricane season that runs June through November.

Summer (June–September): Highs in the low-to-mid 90s with high humidity. Heat index values regularly exceed 100°F. Air conditioning is essential.

Fall (October–November): The best weather of the year. Temperatures drop into the 70s and 80s, humidity decreases, and Gulf breezes are pleasant.

Winter (December–February): Mild by most standards. Highs in the 60s, lows occasionally dipping into the 40s. Freezes are rare but possible.

Spring (March–May): Warm and increasingly humid. Severe thunderstorm season peaks in spring.

Hurricane season: June 1 through November 30. The Brazosport area has been affected by several major hurricanes historically. Monitor the National Hurricane Center during hurricane season and have an evacuation plan ready.

A Good Base for Gulf Coast Life

The Freeport and Brazosport area is not a tourist destination in the traditional sense — it is a working community that happens to sit on the Gulf Coast. That is part of its appeal. Prices are reasonable, the pace is relaxed, and the people are straightforward and friendly.

For guests at Surfside Beach RV Resort, it provides everything you need within a short drive, while the resort itself delivers the Gulf Coast experience that brings people here in the first place.
