How to Plan Your Snowbird RV Trip to the Texas Gulf Coast

Every fall, the same thought crosses the minds of RV owners from Minnesota to Manitoba: it is time to head south. The snowbird migration is one of the great American RV traditions, and the Texas Gulf Coast has been a top destination for winter travelers for decades.

If you are planning your first snowbird trip — or looking to improve on past seasons — this guide covers everything you need to know to plan a successful winter on the Gulf Coast.

When to Leave: Timing Your Departure

The timing of your departure depends on where you are coming from and how much cold weather you are willing to tolerate before heading south.

Early birds (October): Arriving in October means you beat the rush for the best sites, enjoy the Gulf Coast's finest weather (warm days, cool nights, low humidity), and have time to settle in before the winter crowd arrives. The downside is you are leaving home while fall is still pleasant in the north.

Main wave (November): Most snowbirds depart in November, after the first hard freezes up north. This is when RV parks fill up quickly. If you are planning a November arrival, book your site well in advance — popular Gulf Coast parks fill up by September or October.

Late arrivals (December–January): Sites are harder to find, and you have already endured the worst of the northern winter. If you are flexible on location, late arrivals can sometimes find openings when early-season guests depart, but it is a gamble.

Recommendation: Aim for an October or early November arrival. Book your site by September at the latest.

Choosing a Destination: Texas vs. Florida

The two dominant snowbird destinations in the US are Texas and Florida. Both have their merits, but for many RVers the comparison increasingly favors Texas — particularly on cost.

Florida:

  • Established snowbird infrastructure, especially in the Rio Grande Valley equivalent (southwest Florida)
  • Warm, humid winters
  • RV park rates have increased significantly — monthly rates at quality Florida parks now commonly run $800–$1,500+
  • More crowded and developed than it was a generation ago

Texas Gulf Coast:

  • Monthly rates at quality parks like Surfside Beach RV Resort start at $450 — often half or less of comparable Florida options
  • Mild winters with less humidity than Florida
  • Less crowded, more relaxed pace
  • Strong fishing, wildlife, and outdoor recreation
  • Closer for snowbirds from the Midwest and Great Plains (shorter drive)

For value-conscious snowbirds, Texas is hard to beat. The Gulf Coast delivers a genuine beach experience at a fraction of Florida's cost.

Planning Your Route

The drive to Surfside Beach from common snowbird origin points:

  • Minneapolis, MN: ~1,200 miles, approximately 17–18 hours driving time
  • Kansas City, MO: ~800 miles, approximately 11–12 hours
  • Chicago, IL: ~1,100 miles, approximately 15–16 hours
  • Winnipeg, MB: ~1,500 miles, approximately 21–22 hours
  • Denver, CO: ~1,000 miles, approximately 14–15 hours

Most snowbirds break the drive into 2–3 days, stopping at RV parks along the way. I-35 through Oklahoma City and Dallas is the main corridor from the north. From Dallas, TX-6 south through Waco and Houston connects to TX-288 south to the Brazosport area.

Fuel planning: Diesel prices vary along the route. Apps like GasBuddy help identify the cheapest fuel stops. Fill up before entering the Houston metro area, where prices tend to be higher.

RV parks along the route: Thousand Trails, Kampgrounds of America (KOA), and Good Sam parks are distributed along major routes and offer reliable overnight stops. Book ahead during peak migration season (October–November).

What to Bring for a Winter Season

Packing for a 4–6 month stay is different from a weekend trip. Here is a checklist of what experienced snowbirds recommend.

RV Preparation

  • Full mechanical service before departure — engine, generator, tires, brakes, roof seals
  • Tire pressure check — cold northern temperatures may have dropped pressure; check and adjust
  • Winterization reversal — if your RV was winterized, make sure all antifreeze is flushed before connecting to water
  • Leveling blocks and stabilizer pads — essential for setting up on any surface
  • Sewer hose and fittings — bring a quality hose and a 90-degree elbow fitting
  • Water pressure regulator and inline filter — protect your plumbing and improve water quality
  • 30-to-50-amp adapter (or vice versa) — in case the available service does not match your RV

Personal Items

  • Medications: Bring a full supply plus 30 days extra. Arrange mail-order refills if needed.
  • Medical records: Copies of recent records, current prescriptions, and insurance cards
  • Comfortable outdoor furniture: You will spend a lot of time outside
  • Beach gear: Chairs, umbrella, cooler, fishing gear
  • Lightweight clothing: Gulf Coast winters are mild — you will not need heavy winter gear, but a light jacket for cool evenings is useful
  • Rain gear: Gulf Coast winters include occasional frontal systems with heavy rain

Documents

  • Vehicle registration and insurance for both your tow vehicle/motorhome and any towed vehicle
  • RV insurance documents
  • Health insurance cards and Medicare/supplemental insurance information
  • Emergency contact list

Booking Your Site

For a winter season at Surfside Beach RV Resort, here is the booking process:

  1. Call early — (979) 233-5454. We recommend calling by September for a November arrival.
  2. Know your rig dimensions — length, width with slides extended, and whether you need 30-amp or 50-amp service
  3. Discuss your dates — most winter Texans stay November through March or April; let us know your planned arrival and departure
  4. Ask about monthly rates — monthly rates starting at $450 are significantly better than nightly rates for extended stays

Making the Most of Your First Season

First-time snowbirds often say the same thing at the end of their first Gulf Coast winter: they wish they had done it sooner. The combination of warm weather, affordable living, a welcoming community, and the Gulf of Mexico right outside your door is genuinely hard to beat.

A few tips from veterans:

  • Introduce yourself to your neighbors early. The community that forms in a good RV park is one of the best parts of the experience.
  • Establish a routine. Morning beach walks, afternoon fishing, evening cookouts — the Gulf Coast rhythm is easy to fall into and hard to leave.
  • Explore beyond the resort. Day trips to Galveston, Houston, Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, and the surrounding area keep the season interesting.
  • Plan your return date loosely. Many first-time snowbirds extend their stay once they experience a Gulf Coast spring. April and May are beautiful months to be on the water.
