For many RV travelers, leaving the pets at home is not an option. Dogs and cats are family, and finding an RV park that genuinely welcomes them — not just tolerates them — makes all the difference in planning a trip.

The Texas Gulf Coast offers a lot for traveling pets. Wide open beaches, salt air, and warm weather make it a natural fit for dogs especially. Surfside Beach is a relatively quiet, uncrowded stretch of coastline — far less hectic than Galveston's seawall — which means your dog can enjoy the beach without navigating massive crowds.

The beach at Surfside is open to leashed dogs. Most mornings and evenings, you will see resort guests walking their dogs along the waterline. It becomes part of the daily routine quickly, and dogs love it.

We welcome well-behaved pets at the resort. A few guidelines that keep things comfortable for everyone:

• Leashes required on all common areas and the beach
• Clean up after your pet — bags and disposal stations are available
• Pets should not be left unattended outside your RV for extended periods
• Excessive barking is a courtesy issue — please manage your pet's noise, especially in the evenings

Most guests are pet owners themselves, so the community is understanding and friendly toward animals. That said, common courtesy goes a long way.

Traveling with pets in an RV takes a little extra planning. Here is what experienced pet-owning RVers recommend.

Vet records and vaccinations. Bring a copy of your pet's vaccination records, especially rabies. Some RV parks require proof of current vaccinations, and you will want them on hand if your pet needs veterinary care on the road.

Identification. Make sure your pet has a current ID tag with your cell phone number — not your home address. A microchip is the best backup. If your pet gets loose in an unfamiliar area, current contact info is critical.

Enough food and medication. If your pet is on a prescription diet or medication, bring enough for the full stay plus a buffer. Specialty pet foods are not always available in smaller coastal towns.

A familiar item from home. A favorite blanket, toy, or bed helps pets settle into a new environment faster. The familiar scent reduces anxiety during the transition.

A long tie-out or exercise pen gives your dog outdoor time without requiring you to hold the leash constantly. Set it up in the shade if possible.

Fresh water always available. Gulf Coast heat and humidity mean pets need more water than usual. Check the bowl frequently and keep it in the shade.

Watch for overheating. Dogs especially can overheat quickly in Texas summer heat. Limit outdoor time during the hottest part of the day (11am–4pm), and never leave a pet in a closed RV without air conditioning running.

Paw protection. Hot pavement and sand can burn paw pads. Walk your dog on grass or wet sand during peak heat hours, or consider dog booties if your pet will tolerate them.

Most dogs are thrilled by the ocean — and most have no idea what to do with it at first. A few things to keep in mind:

• Rinse your dog after beach time. Salt water and sand irritate skin and ears with repeated exposure. A quick freshwater rinse after each beach visit prevents problems.
• Watch for jellyfish. They wash up on Gulf beaches, especially after storms. Curious dogs will investigate — keep them away.
• Not all dogs are natural swimmers. The Gulf surf can be stronger than it looks. Keep an eye on dogs near the water, especially smaller breeds.
• Bring shade. If you are spending time on the beach, bring a beach umbrella or canopy for your pet to rest under.

The nearest full-service veterinary clinics are in Lake Jackson and Freeport, about 15–20 minutes from the resort. It is worth identifying the nearest clinic when you arrive, before you need it.

For after-hours emergencies, the nearest 24-hour emergency veterinary clinic is in the Houston area, approximately 90 minutes away. Keep the number saved in your phone.

The best part of bringing your pet to Surfside Beach is the daily rhythm it creates. Morning beach walks, afternoon naps in the shade, evening strolls around the resort — it is a genuinely good life for a dog, and for the humans who love them.
