Surfside Beach, Texas does not show up on most "top Texas beach destinations" lists. That is exactly why RVers love it.

No spring break crowds. No $30 parking fees. No bumper-to-bumper traffic on the seawall. Just miles of open Gulf Coast shoreline, world-class fishing, and one of the best birding refuges in North America — all within a short drive of Houston.

Here is everything you need to know before your visit.

Surfside Beach is a small beach community on Follets Island in Brazoria County, about 60 miles south of Houston. It sits at the mouth of the Brazos River where it meets the Gulf of Mexico.

The town itself is small — a few thousand permanent residents — but it draws visitors year-round for its beaches, fishing, and outdoor recreation.

Getting there from Houston: Take TX-288 South to Lake Jackson, then TX-332 East to Surfside Beach. The drive takes about 75–90 minutes depending on Houston traffic.

From Galveston: Take the free ferry from Galveston to Bolivar Peninsula, then drive south on TX-87 and cross the San Luis Pass toll bridge. About 45 minutes.

Surfside Beach has miles of open Gulf shoreline. The beach is wide, sandy, and — compared to Galveston — remarkably uncrowded even on summer weekends.

What to expect:

• Warm Gulf water (typically 75–85°F in summer)
• Gentle waves, good for swimming and wading
• Shell collecting along the shoreline
• Sunrise and sunset views over the Gulf
• Driving on the beach is permitted in designated areas

The beach is free and open to the public. There is no admission fee, no parking meter, and no resort fee.

Fishing is the main draw for many visitors to Surfside Beach. The area offers some of the best inshore and nearshore fishing on the Texas Gulf Coast.

The Intracoastal Waterway, Brazos River, and surrounding bays offer excellent inshore fishing for:

• Redfish (Red Drum) — One of the most popular target species. Found year-round in the bays and channels.
• Speckled Trout — Best in fall and spring. Found in grass flats and along channel edges.
• Flounder — Best in fall during the "flounder run" when they migrate to the Gulf.
• Black Drum — Found near structure and oyster reefs.

The beach itself offers good surf fishing, especially at dawn and dusk. Common catches include whiting, pompano, and redfish.

Charter boats operate out of Freeport (about 10 miles north) for offshore fishing. Targets include red snapper, kingfish, mahi-mahi, and wahoo. The Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary is about 100 miles offshore.

• Bryan Beach State Park — Free public beach access with good surf fishing.
• Quintana Beach County Park — Brazoria County park with RV camping, fishing pier, and beach access.
• Freeport Municipal Marina — Boat launches and charter fishing operations.

If you have any interest in birds or wildlife, the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge is a must-visit.

The refuge covers over 44,000 acres of coastal prairie, wetlands, and marshes. It has been ranked #1 birding destination in North America by the Audubon Society in 12 of the last 21 years.

• Whooping Cranes (endangered; winter visitors)
• Alligators (year-round)
• White-tailed deer
• Hundreds of migratory songbird species during spring and fall migration

Sea Center Texas in Lake Jackson is a free marine aquarium and fish hatchery operated by Texas Parks and Wildlife. It is a great stop for families.

The aquarium features native Texas marine species including redfish, flounder, sharks, and sea turtles. The hatchery produces millions of fish each year to stock Texas bays and coastal waters.

Galveston Island (45 minutes) — Historic seawall, Pleasure Pier amusement park, The Strand historic district, Moody Gardens, and Schlitterbahn water park. Good for a full day trip.

Houston (75–90 minutes) — NASA's Johnson Space Center, Houston Zoo, Museum District, professional sports, and world-class dining. Easy day trip or overnight.

Brazosport Area (10–15 minutes) — The communities of Freeport, Clute, Lake Jackson, and Angleton make up the Brazosport area. Good for grocery shopping, restaurants, and services.

Surfside Beach has a subtropical climate with mild winters and warm, humid summers.

Best overall months: October, November, March, and April offer the best combination of weather, fishing, and birding.

Hurricane season: June through November. Monitor forecasts if visiting during this period.

The Surfside Beach area has a handful of local restaurants worth knowing about:

• Kitty's Purple Cow — Local diner in Surfside Beach. Breakfast and lunch.
• Jetty Shack — Casual seafood near the jetties in Freeport.
• Freeport area — Several chain restaurants and local spots about 10 miles north.
• Lake Jackson — More dining options about 15 miles north, including seafood, Tex-Mex, and national chains.

Surfside Beach is not trying to be Galveston or South Padre Island. It is quieter, more affordable, and more authentic — and that is exactly what makes it special.
